NY Auto Show Recap

This week the LABS619 team attended the annual New York International Auto Show (NYIAS) at the Javits Center in New York City to peruse the upcoming trends in the industry for 2016. As one of the world’s premiere automotive showcases, NYIAS boasts over four floors of displays from manufacturers throughout the world featuring their newest offerings and concept vehicles. But while the show attracts thousands of novice car enthusiasts annually, Felix Velez (CEO and Founder of LABS619) had a very specific reason for attending this year – getting in touch with the latest model muscle cars for the upcoming MMC Competition being presented by LABS619 this summer. Velez said it was a good show with a nice display of cars as usual– particularly the Dodge/Chrysler section, which featured a color-coordinated array of muscle. Favorites included the Dodge Charger Hellcat featuring a 6.2L V8 engine and the 2016 Chevy Camaro, which also has a 6.2 option along with their 2.0 4-cylinder and 3.6 V6 offerings. Muscle VS Eco The throwback look and power of muscle cars is an industry trend that was seen at the SEMA Show back in November as well. But there is, of course, still a booming eco-friendly and hybrid explosion going on which was also visible at many of the manufacturers displays at NYIAS. Velez likened the muscle/hybrid juxtaposition to an instance of history repeating itself when America first flexed its muscle with (now) classic cars like the Camaro and Mustang. “We’re seeing now what happened back in the 70’s,” Velez said. “When the Japanese introduced their models – smaller, more efficient, less pollution. It’s a good... read more

Goodbye Scion, Hello New Cult Classic

In February, Toyota announced that it would be discontinuing its Scion line in an effort to engage the new market of millennial buyers with the tried and trusted brand of Toyota instead of  the standout funkiness of Scion that was used to attract the previous generation. This news is of particular interest to us here at LABS619 because last May, we proudly worked together with Hudson Toyota and Scion to bring what was the first – and is now probably the only – Scion Day to Jersey City, NJ. A great crew of supporters came out along with La Mega 97.9, for a fun afternoon and a successful event. Slated to end production by the close of 2016, Scion now looms over its own unknown legacy. Killing off Scion and remarking their concepts under Toyota is a strategic move for the company, one that many other car manufacturers have also utilized. Scion is not the first – and certainly won’t be the last – brand to be discontinued by their mother marque… Daewoo, Geo, Yugo, Saturn, are all brands of yesteryear that were tried and ultimately tied up for the trash. But even after a brand extension goes out of production, many of those cars can all still be seen on the road – the question is, HOW are they seen? Will the legacy of Scion be tossed in the heap with the likes of those which were never really a success in the first place? Or will there be a unique draw to these discontinued models with a cult following? “Scion will be remembered as fun, sporty little cars,” says Felix Velez, CEO of... read more
